What is the smart grid?

The smart grid is a term applied to an electricity network of the future in which an Information and Communications (ICT) network is overlaid on the existing power network in order to allow information about the grid's current state and commands to be communicated. The aim of this is to allow the grid to intelligently respond to available generation and consumer demand. The European smartgrids project (http://www.smartgrids.eu) has a useful working definition.
