Dr Yi Zhang is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development of De Montfort University, United Kingdom. His main research interests are in building simulation and design optimization, as well as in human thermal comfort. He has been a key contributor to a number of research projects, including "Optimal Supervisory Control of Renewable Energy Systems in Buildings" (UK EPSRC) and CityNet (EU FP6 Marie Curie RTN). He is currently leading the ADOPT project (UK TSB) which aims to bring numerical optimisation to the practice of building design. Since 2009, Yi has been developing a software tool called jEPlus, which has enjoy a steadily growing international user base.

Following the award of BEng degrees in HVAC&R Engineering and Environmental Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1995, Yi studied at the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (a.k.a. the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine). His work on the development of a personal indoor thermal environment monitor resulted in the award of an MSc in 1998. He has since spent 12 months as a visiting researcher in the International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy of the Technical University of Denmark, where he participated in the EU FP4 project “Uncertainty of Draught Measurement with Thermal Anemometers”.

In 2005, Yi was awarded a PhD in the Civil and Building Engineering department of Loughborough University for his work on “Building System Design Synthesis and Optimization” (ASHRAE RP-1049). The innovative aspect of this work was the use of topological optimization to automatically generate conceptual designs for air-conditioning systems. The research provided the first step towards the optimal design of the whole building. This work has also won an "Honourable Mention" award in the "2005 Human-Competitive Results" competition.

Yi’s research interests also include human thermal comfort modelling in the built environment. He is responsible for the further development of the IESD-Fiala model.
