Xudong Zhao is Professor of Low Carbon Society at the IESD. Professor Zhao’s expertise lies in the fields of building services technology, renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. His current work includes investigations of: a dew point heat exchanger, funded by the EU; a heat pump assisted loop heat pipe solar façade based water heating system (HP-LP-SOLAR-FAÇADE), funded by EU; R & D in Sustainable Building Energy Systems and Retrofitting (R-D-SBES-R), funded by EU, and a novel PV/capillary-loop-heat-pipes (c-l-h-p) heat pump sysyem, funded by SPEC. During his career, he has been involved in 35 research projects, and attracted research funds in excess of £5 million from the EU, EPSRC, DTI, ICUK and industry.

Professor Zhao has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers on sustainable energy and building technologies in refereed journals and conferences, and chaired several international conferences, including the UK-China Forum on Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies for Buildings in 2009. He has been an External Reviewer for French National Agency (ANR),  the Hong Kong Research Grant Council and Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) in UK, Guest Professor of Harbin Institute of Technology, Guangdong University of Technology, and Beijing University of Architecture and Engineering, Editorial board member of ‘International Journal of Sustainable Cities and Society’ and ‘Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning’, Committee Member of the UK Chinese Association of Resources and Environment, and a reviewer for several international journals, including ‘Energy’, Applied Thermal Engineering’, ‘Applied Energy’ and ‘Building and Environment’ et al.

Professor Zhao has extensive teaching and supervision experience in both the UK and China. Among the courses that he has taught for BEng, MEng and MSc students are ‘Building Service Design’, ‘Building Air Conditioning and Ventilation’, ‘Contamination Control (Clean Room Technology)’, and ‘Research Methodology’. He was also the course director of the MSc Sustainable Building Technology course during his time at Nottingham University. To date he has supervised (or co-supervised) 12 PhD students and 6 postdoctoral research fellows.

Professor Zhao also has several years experience of working in industry and in management. He has been involved in over 40 engineering projects relating to the design or installation of air conditioning and cleaning systems for buildings, including hotels, shopping centres, hospitals, airports, offices, and sports centres.

Prior to joining the IESD, Professor Zhao was a Lecturer and Course Director for the MSc Sustainable Building Technology course at Nottingham University. He obtained his PhD at Nottingham University in 2003, his MSc in 1987 at Harbin Institute of Technology (China), and his BEng degree in 1984 at Taiyuan University of Technology (China). From 1987 to 1997, he worked at Taiyuan University of Technology as a Lecturer and then Associate Professor.
