Vijay received his Bachelors in Electrical & Electronics Engineering in Bangalore University, India in 2001, with a focus on Electrical Machines, Electromagnetic Theory, Power System Analysis and Power Electronics. As a part of his final year project he worked at the Central Power Research Institute, analyzing short-term ratings of the new generation of enamelled wires. During 2002-2004, he did his MSc in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, with a dissertation entitled “Intelligent Techniques for Fault Location in Distribution Systems using Artificial Neural Networks”. He then turned his interest back to machine learning and probabilistic systems, on which he researched towards a PhD degree in the Science and Engineering of Natural Systems Group (SENSe) at the University of Southampton. The topic of thesis was “Dynamics of Molecular Fluctuations in Gene Regulatory Networks”, in which a bottom-up approach was initiated using physical and probabilistic principles to aid the retrieval of complex regulatory networks. He was awarded a PhD degree in 2009.

Vijay joined the IESD as a Research Fellow in 2010, to work on the “Complex Adaptive Systems, Cognitive Agents and Distributed Energy (CASCADE)” project. The project proposes to investigate the electricity grid models and to design and develop agent-based models for the purpose of supporting smart-grid concepts. His broader research interests include Power System Analysis, Complexity Science, Machine Learning, Optimization and Stochastic Processes. Within the field of Power Systems in particular, he is specialized in Load Flow and Short Circuit Analysis, Stability Analysis, Economic Dispatch and Electricity Markets.
