Stephen graduated from Manchester University in 1983  with a BSc (Honours) in Physics. In 2007 he joined the IESD on the Energy and Sustainable Building Design MSc course and transferred to his current PhD post in July 2008.

Stephen’s research forms part of a multi-university, £2M EPSRC funded project, Community Resilience to Extreme Weather (CREW). The effect of climate change is increasingly manifested through more frequent and more intense extreme weather events, including heat waves and flooding. The Institute’s role is to investigate both technological and people-based measures to reduce the impact of such events.

Stephen’s work uses building simulation software (IES and EnergyPlus) to model the effects of adaptations to domestic buildings. His research aims to rank both individual and clustered measures and to assess their effectiveness for risk reduction. He is also investigating the effects of heat wave duration on different building types to see how this will affect the modification strategy.

After graduating from Manchester University, Stephen worked as a stills photographer for 3 years. He then spent the next 21 years travelling the world as a lighting television cameraman, working on such diverse programmes as Formula 1, Mastermind and the Olympic Games.
