Dr Nell Chang

Dr. Nell Chang was trained as an architect in Hong Kong. She had practiced as Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager and Assistant Architect in Hong Kong and mainland China and was responsible for the supervision of several large scale construction projects in her practice. Before joining the academia, she had taken a long journey traveling around the world, covering 67 countries in all the seven continents including Antarctica.

Following her round the world journey, she decided to further her study in the property investment and financial area and was awarded of the MSc. degree in Property Investment and Development and the Doctorate in the area of Behavioural Influence on Property Appraisal and on Property Development Decision at the University of Manchester (UMIST). She had later completed a PG Cert in Supervision at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) while working there. She has become a board member of the Riverside North East Limited, an asset-holding social housing provider, since 2006.

Dr. Chang joined the IESD in 2010 as a Research Fellow. She is working on the European Cyber Display project funded by the European Commission, and the EPSRC-funded ‘Engaging Pupils, Teachers and Governors in the Science, Engineering and Technology of Carbon Neutral Schools’ project. Prior to joining the IESD, she held a post as a lecturer in Construction Project Management and was also the course leader of the MSc programme in Property Development, teaching CPM, Contract Law and Project Appraisal.

On the research side, she was the coordinator of the “Feasibility Study for Living Cities” project at Mackintosh School of Architecture of Glasgow School of Art. The project was funded by a Strategic Research Development Grant from the Scottish Funding Council. She was also the research development coordinator responsible for managing the RAE database and establishing a research culture in GSA. Dr. Chang has experience in conducting educational research in schools when working as a Research Associate for a quadrant of five schools/colleges under the Transforming Secondary Education initiative at Nottingham. It was a project funded by the DfES Innovation Unit.

Dr. Chang has a broad range of research interests in architecture, construction project management, property investment, project appraisal and sustainable social/private housing development, to the behavioural influence on building energy performance and the urban cities’ sustainable transformation. Her specialist interest is in behavioral research into the property/housing market combining her previous experience as Project Manager and Assistant Architect in the construction field with the Behavioral Theory in Property Appraisal, with also a new application on the area of behavioural/perceptional change in energy issues.
