Michael returned to higher education in 2002 and gained a BSc (Honours) Environmental Management degree at Sheffield Hallam University. Following his graduation, in 2006, he joined the IESD as a PhD research student on the Carbon Reductions in Buildings (CaRB) project.
His PhD work investigated the use of information, communication and entertainment appliances (i.e. consumer electronics and ICT equipment) in UK households. The mixed methods research used energy monitoring equipment to record households’ patterns of electricity consumption and follow-up interviews to explore householder behaviour. Initial results of his research were presented at the EEDAL '09 conference in Berlin.
Michael is currently a Research Assistant on the EPSRC funded project: “Reduction of Energy Demand in Buildings through Optimal Use of Wireless Behaviour Information (Wi-be) Systems” (EP/I000259/1). The project is investigating the use of wireless network systems for monitoring personal energy use and occupancy tracking in order to deliver feedback information to encourage energy saving behaviour. |
