MSc programme: Research Methods module

Topic 1: Research Strategy
This topic provides a general introduction to research methods, including quantitative and qualitative research. The various types of methodology that students may need to complete their dissertation are described. The topic also introduces the assignments that students will complete during the course of this module.

Topic 2: Computer Skills
This topic provides an introduction to the computer skills necessary to complete the MSc. The use of the World Wide Web as a tool in successfully completing the course is outlined.

Topic 3: Analysis and Interpretation
This topic focuses on the careful interpretation of the published research of others. The importance of measuring and analysing parameters is outlined. Case study material on buildings, cities and global data are used.

Topic 4: Survey Research
In this topic, students examine the different methods available to assess people's attitudes and behaviour. They look at the attitudes of decision makers and the behaviour of the general public. Teaching is supported by examples of real surveys and the data that they generated.

Topic 5: Statistical Techniques
This topic looks at statistical analysis techniques to be used when conducting one's own research.

Topic 6: Presentation and Writing Skills
This topic provides information on presentation skills (including posters and graphic skills). It includes report writing techniques and guidance on the preparation of papers for publication.
