MSc programme: Energy in Buildings module |
Topic 1: Introduction
The physics and units for describing energy and power are introduced, and statistics on energy use and carbon emissions arising from buildings are given. Influences of climate on building design are described with examples. Types of building structure and relation to energy are introduced. |
Topic 2: Building Energy Fundamentals
The physics of heat transfer in buildings is introduced in terms of thermal properties of the fabric and heat loss calculations. Influences of different types of building structure on thermal performance are described. Air heating and cooling processes are explained. Students are introduced to natural and artificial daylighting strategies and systems. |
Topic 3: Sustainable Dwellings
Design principles and examples of sustainable, low energy dwellings are used at this stage to introduce students to sustainable building design concepts. The material is reinforced using case studies. |
Topic 4: Ventilation and Cooling Systems
This topic covers the principles of natural and mechanical ventilation, control of moisture and cooling. Mechanical and natural ventilation strategies are presented. Conventional and low energy air conditioning systems are described. |
Topic 5: Legislation, Codes and building evaluation
This describes the context, range and scope of legislation and voluntary codes on making buildings more sustainable, with examples from around the world. European legislation and the UK Building Regulations are covered in more detail. |
