The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development, De Montfort University is hosting its first PhD Conference. It is expected to become an annual event and in this phase of its development is open only to the University’s students submitting papers and posters in the general area of sustainability as main or sole authors. Thanks to the vision of the Institute’s new Director, Professor Marjan Sarshar and its excellent and supportive research culture, the organisers expect the conference to expand rapidly from this modest beginning. It will aim to become an international PhD student conference with themes and foci reflecting the internationally regarded, multidisciplinary research of the institute, bringing together PhD students, academics and researchers to discuss and debate a wide range of ideas and issues in energy and sustainable development from the perspectives of engineers, technologists, social scientists and policy experts.
The accepted papers in these proceedings already give ample indication of this broad sustainability agenda and of the relevance and timeliness of the research currently being undertaken. There are papers covering control of hybrid renewable energy installations, urban scale building energy modelling, carbon neutral communities, mitigating the effects of climate change, sustainable development in Nigeria, thermal comfort and aging, carbon reduction through group participation, novel PV technology, ground source heat pump borehole optimisation, social networks and environmental psychology, behaviour change communication and advances in HVAC systems modelling.
As well as the 13 full papers, the Institute’s students present a number of posters as a focus for discussion including several recent prize winning examples of work. Of these, posters submitted specifically to the conference are included within the proceedings as abstracts and, where appropriate are also represented by full papers relating to the work described.
The Conference will be chaired by Professor Hazim Awbi, of the University of Reading, who will also give the keynote speech. Another highlight of the day will be a presentation titled Communicating Research by Dr. John Mardaljevic, a Reader in Daylight Modelling at the IESD.
